Jacob Lanter
Descendants of Jacob Lanter
Generation No. 1
1. JACOB3 LANTER (PETER2, THOMAS1 LANTOR) was born August 11, 1762 in Orange County, Virginia, and died July 1, 1837 in Campbell, Kentucky. He married VIRGINIA MARY POLLY WEBB December 20, 1787 in Orange County, Virginia, daughter of JOHN WEBB and MARY SINGLETON.
Notes for JACOB LANTER:
Jacob Lanter was a Revolutionary War Veteran in the Militia of the State of Virginia as a private. Jacob served in the Bloody 3rd, and was at the Battle of James Town. He served in 1778 for three months under Captain May Burton and Colonel Thomas Matthews. Then he served again in 1781 for three months in the place of his brother in law, Henry Clayton, who was drafted under Captain George Waughs and Colonel Ennis, under General Lawson, of the State of Virginia. On this tour of duty, he marched to Gloucester, Virginia, most of the time guarding prisoners at Fredericksburg, Virginia. Jacob was ages 15 to 18 during this time in the service, serving three months at a time. Jacob and his family are thought to have settled in Montgomery County, Kentucky in the year 1809. They resided there until 1817, when they moved to Harrison County, Kentucky. Mary move to Decatur County, Indiana after Jacob died.

Pension W-10191
Jacob Lanter - (Pensioner) - settlement filed record book F, Page 445, dated September 11, 1846.
Jacob received $20.00 annually starting March 4, 1821 for the rest of his natural life.
Jacob became associated with preachers Elijah Craig, and Aaron Bledsoe. Both of these men were part of the Separatist Movement in the Baptist Church. The Lanters were members of the Blue Run Baptist Church, and the North Pamunkey Baptist Church. Both churches are still standing today in Orange County, Virginia. Jacob and Polly moved to Kentucky, we think because Craig and Bledsoe moved there to settle. Craig is credited with the discovery of Bourbon and became a prominent Kentucky Citizen.
DEPOSITION OF JACOB LANTER
Concerning Revolutionary War Service
On this 14th day of January 1833 before us Enoch Mathew, Joel Frazier, William Marshall, and William Brown, constituting the County Court of Harrison County, in the state of Kentucky which is a court of record, now setting, appeared Jacob Lanter a resident of Harrison County, in the state of Kentucky aged upward of seventy years, having been born on the 11th day of August 1762.
Who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the law of congress passed June 7th 1832. He states that he entered the service of the United States, under the following named officers and served as is here in after stated.
That he was drafted in the Virginia Service for the United States in the summer of 1778 under Captain May Burton, Lieutenant Smith and Ensign Rucker, in the Regiment Commanded by Colonel Thomas Matthews, (called the Bloody 3rd ) and Major Nicholas Long in General Lawsons Brigade. This tour was for three months. That he was residing in Orange County Virginia where he marched to Williamsburg to and from place to place until the expiration of the tour, when he was discharged. General Lafayette and General Wayne were regular officers in the Service with him at the same time. That he also voluntarily took the place and station of his brother in law Henry Clayton (who was drafted) in the summer of 1781 under Captain George Waugh, Ensign Tarver Nelson in the regiment commanded by Colonel Ennis and Major Carey, under General Lawson. This tour was for three months that he marched from Orange County Virginia to Gloucester opposite Little York here and during the siege against Cornwallis. He spent the most of this tour and after the capture of Cornwallis, he marched guarding the prisoners to Fredericksburg, when at the termination of his tour he was dismissed and he went home. Generals Washington, Lafayette, and Wayne are recollected that he received his Captains Discharge for both of the foregoing tours, which were lost and destroyed on his journey to Kentucky on his removal that State that he verily believes and aspects his way in the actual Service of the United States full six months consisting of said two tours of three months each.
He states that he was born in Orange County, Virginia on the 11th day of August 1762, that he has no record of his age that he was living in Orange County, Virginia, when he entered the service in both of his tours and resided there after the Revolution until the fall of 1810, when he started for Kentucky where he arrived in Montgomery County in the next spring and resided there until about 1820, when he removed to Harrison County, Kentucky, where he has resided ever since and now resides there.
He states that there is no person living within his knowledge by whom he can prove his services, except Claibourne Chandler and Edward Pollard who were in Colonel Mathews Regiment with him.
He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity, except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension role of the agency of any state or territory whatever.

Notes for WYATT LANTER:
Wyatt was one of the "participants" in Dudley's Defeat during the relief of the seige of Ft Maumee (near present day Toledo). The story is that Gen Wm Harrison (later president) ordered Dudley and his KY militia to seize a battery of British cannons, a task they accomplished but after spiking the guns the "victorious" militia ran headlong after the retreating British and ran into a British/Indian ambush in which most were killed or captured. Apparently Wyatt was one of the former.

Notes for LARKIN LANTER:
Larkin was in the War of 1812, serving in the 22nd Regiment of the Kentucky Volunteer Mounted Infantry.
Larkin's mounted militia unit raided through Canada and got as far as York (now Toronto) before retreating.
He received two different Land Warrants from the Government for his military services. One grant was 40 acres, the other was 120 acres. The land is four miles west of Colemansville, Kentucky. There is a picture of Larkin of which several family members have a copy. He is a bold strict looking man, with downward slanting eyes, hair to the bottom of his collar, and a beard that goes from ear to ear under his chin. He looks as though one should have been fearful of him, but it has been said that he was a very kind and dear "gentle man". The picture also shows what seems to be a large birthmark on his forehead over his left eye near the hairline.

Burial: Larkin is buried next to his second wife Margaret, on the farm they owned in Cynthiana, Kentucky

JOHN T. LANTER, of Hiatt & Lanter, merchants, was born February 10, 1835, in Wayne County, Indiana, and reared on a farm. At the age of seventeen he went to Arkansas, where he remained about five years. In the spring of 1857 he moved to Kansas and located near Greeley, Anderson County. He at once identified himself with the Free State party, and was sent as a delegate from Anderson County, in 1858, to the Ossawatomie Convention, which organized the Republican party in Kansas, and from that time to the present he has been a firm supporter in that party. In May, 1858, he was elected to the Territorial Legislature on the Free-State ticket under the Leavenworth Constitution. In the same year he was a delegate to the Ottumwa Convention, in which nineteen counties that had been disenfranchised by the bogus Legislature were represented. He was the author of the Resolution adopted by that Convention which brought the grievances of southern Kansas to the notice of the public. In the spring of 1860 he was elected County Assessor, and the following winter was Engrossing Clerk of the last Territorial Legislature. In 1864 he was appointed United States Assistant Assessor and held that position until the office was abolished. In 1863 he was commissioned Assistant Provost-Marshal with the rank of Lieutenant, and assigned to duty on the border. He remained there about eighteen months. In 1872 he was elected to the State Legislature, where he was active and instrumental in defeating Pomeroy for the United States Senate. In 1873 he was appointed one of the trustees for the State Insane Asylum. He was elected Mayor of the city of Garnett in 1874, and served one term. In 1876 he was appointed one of the State Board of Charities. In 1872 he organized the Citizens' Bank at Garnett, elected President, which position he filled for some years. Since 1878 he has been largely interested in lead mines at Galena, Kansas, and in February, 1882, he became associated with J. G. Hiatt in mercantile business. Previous to organizing the Citizens' Bank, Mr. Lanter followed agricultural pursuits.

220 HISTORY OF
Rev. David Baldwin settled on the Pottowatomie, north of Greeley, in 1854; was a Methodist minister of the gospel, and a radical Free State man. In 1856 he and his son David Baldwin, then a mere boy, were taken prisoners by Major Buford and his Ruffian party. They were taken to Paola, and there detained as prisoners for several days, without any charge against them, only that of being Free State men. After keeping them under guard and subjecting them to all kinds of abuse and insult familiar to Border Ruffian characters, they were released to return to their home on the Pottowatomie. Mr. Baldwin's family consisted of himself, his son David, and his daughter Elizabeth. During the time that Mr. Baldwin and his son were prisoners in the camp of the Ruffians, Miss Elizabeth, then a girl of about twenty years of age, was left at home alone to care for the household affairs, and most bravely and heroically did she guard her father's house and property in his absence. She remained there all alone, and took care of his affairs. She is deserving of as much credit for her devotion to the cause of freedom as any other woman in the State, and she knows full well the hardships and suffering encountered by the women of Kansas in its early struggles.

Classification: Obituary - The Log Cabin, Cynthiana Kentucky, November 26, 1915
Rufus A Beagle, who was murdered Sunday night while in the performance of his duty, was 54 years of age, and was a member of a prominent Grant County (Ky) family. He was born near Cordova, and was the son of the late E.J. Beagle and Rebecca Beagle of Grant County. His father was at one time jailer of Grant County and his brother J.T. Beagle, is now Circuit Clerk of Grant County.
Rufus A Beagle was reared in Grant County, and went to Kansas with his parents, they residing there about six years. After their return to Grant County, Rufus located near Lees burg, Harrison County, about twenty-four years ago and engaged in farming for a number of years. He married Pearl Carter, who survives him, with two sons, Elmer and Ewel, and one daughter, Maude Beagle. He also leaves two brothers, Wm J, and J.T. of Williamstown, three sisters, Mrs Jeptha Dunn of Lexington, Mrs Joanne Oder of Crescent Springs, and Mrs Martha Hazelwood of Glasgow, Kansas.
Mr. Beagle and family moved from Leesburg to Cynthiana where for about two years he was connected with the Smith-Terry Undertaking Company. For the past seven years he has been a member of the Cynthiana Police Department and has been a splendid officer. He was absolutely fearless and faced danger with a quiet determination and bravery, which made him respected and feared by evil doers. He was never ostentatious of self-important in the discharge of his duties, but always showed moderation and a calm bravery under trying circumstances. It was this very b bravery, coupled with a desire to act with deliberation, which caused him to lose his life in the quiet discharge of duty Sunday night. He filled a responsible and trying position well, and his murder takes away a man whose influence was for good in this community. The funeral services were held at the Christian Church Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev, J.D. Armistead, who paid a Fitting tribute to this conscientious and faithful officer whose life was sacrificed in the discharge of his duty. A large crowd attended the funeral, and the mayor, city officials, police and fire departments attending in body, the members of the fire department acting as an escort to Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana, Kentucky.
